Wilson began like most other frontier towns where growth was very slow until it had a railroad. The Wilmington-Weldon Railroad was completed in 1845 which spurred remarkable development in Wilson. In January 1849, Wilson was officially established as a town after merging the villages of Hickory Grove and Toisnot Junction. It was named in honor of Louis D. Wilson, a legislator and soldier, who died fighting in the Mexican War.
