In 1810, an American Revolutionary War soldier Colonel Robert Love, founded Waynesville. He donated land for the construction of a public square, a courthouse, and a jail. Robert Love named the settlement in honor of his former commander, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. It was incorporated as a town in 1871. Railroad arrived in 1884, which led to growth in the agricultural, tourism, and lumber industries. The area where the train station was built was named "Frog Level" and eventually became the commercial center of the community. In July of 1995, the towns of Waynesville and Hazelwood merged to form a larger community
