Tarboro was originally inhabited by the Tuscarora Indians. It was first settled by the whites in the 1730s. At that time, the area was known as Tawboro, which was derived from an Indian term "Taw meaning "river of health. It was incorporated on November 30, 1760, and was renamed Tarborough. The town became the county seat of Edgecombe County in 1764. George Washington, first President of the United States, visited the town during his 1791 Southern tour.
