The present day town of Southern Pines was founded in 1884 by John T. Patrick. It was originally named Vineland but was changed to Southern Pines. In 1931, the town annexed West Southern Pines, the first incorporated African American town of North Carolina. Southern Pines was the hometown of James Holshouser, Jr., the Republican Governor of North Carolina in 1973.
